Sana’a – The Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Science and Technology (UST), organized two field visits for fourth-level students on Wednesday and Thursday. The visits included a construction site for Nasser Aqeel Investment and Trade Factory for local marble and granite production, and Omran Ready-Mix Concrete Plant, as part of the faculty’s commitment to strengthening practical training and linking theoretical knowledge with real-world applications in construction, production, and industrial environments.
During the visits, students explored various technical and engineering aspects related to industrial projects. At the marble and granite factory construction site, they were introduced to the project’s key components, including production and storage hangars, sawing and polishing units, gantry crane facilities, and water filtration tanks used for slurry treatment, learning about their types and roles in water treatment and recycling processes.
The practical component of the visit also focused on the inspection of reinforcement steel for T-shaped strip foundations and tie beams connecting both ends of the crane rail system. Students further learned about surveying operations, benchmark points, point-setting procedures, leveling works, and methods for verifying elevations and dimensions against approved design drawings.
During the visit to Omran Ready-Mix Concrete Plant, students gained insight into the concrete production process, beginning with raw material storage areas and wet and dry concrete production lines, and extending to the materials laboratory, where tests are conducted on cement, sand, and aggregates, as well as on hardened concrete samples to verify quality and strength.
Students also learned about production quality-control mechanisms, daily and monthly production capacities, the company’s market coverage, the central batching control unit used to regulate mix proportions, and the various admixtures employed to improve concrete properties, enhance workability, and achieve target strength requirements.
The visits were supervised by Prof. Ziyad Al-Juboubi and Dr. Mohammed Al-Amoudi. Students received detailed explanations from specialists at both the factory and the concrete plant. The visits provided a valuable educational opportunity to observe engineering applications firsthand and apply concepts studied in reinforced concrete, foundations, surveying, and construction materials courses, thereby enhancing their practical skills, preparing them for the labor market, and strengthening the connection between theoretical learning and field practice.
