About the Department of Civil Engineering:
The Department of Civil Engineering is a leading department at the College of Engineering at the University of Science and Technology, which was inaugurated in the academic year 2002/2003. The department is the first of its kind among private universities in the Republic of Yemen. It was established out of the university’s belief in its national duty to provide advanced university education locally and regionally, and to serve as a vital engineering tributary that prepares competent engineers equipped with the necessary foundational knowledge and engineering skills. These skills are essential for establishing infrastructure and serving society in the various fields of civil engineering, thereby meeting the demands of the local, regional, and global job markets.
Guided by the university’s strategy and its commitment to excellence in education, the academic program was first developed according to the council’s standards in the academic year 2012/2013. The study system was later converted from a semester-based system to a credit-hour system by a university council decision in 2017, which constituted the second development cycle. Based on this, the course descriptions were aligned and improved. Currently, the department is in its third development cycle, driven by a commitment to keeping pace with scientific progress and the evolving requirements of the job market.
To date, seventeen cohorts have graduated from the program. The first batch graduated in the academic year 2006/2007, and the total number of graduates has reached 1,636 engineers by the end of the academic year 2022/2023.
Program Mission Statement:
The Civil Engineering program is committed to preparing scientifically and practically proficient engineers who are equipped with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to meet the demands of the local and regional job markets. The program also aims to foster their ability to conduct applied research, successfully address real-world civil engineering problems, and provide practical, effective solutions that serve society. We achieve this through a highly competent academic staff, a modern curriculum that keeps pace with scientific and technological advancements, and a suitable educational environment that adheres to quality and accreditation standards as well as professional and ethical requirements.
The Program Educational Objectives:
The program educational objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation, which are:
- PEO 1: Technical and Professional Competence: Graduates will successfully apply the fundamental principles of civil engineering, based on mathematical, scientific, and engineering foundations. This will enable them to practice their profession as civil engineers capable of designing, analyzing, and implementing diverse civil engineering projects and providing effective and innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.
- PEO 2: Practical and Analytical Skills: Graduates will possess the necessary skills and tools for design, modeling, problem-solving, and experimental data analysis, as well as computing skills. This will enable them to analyze specialized engineering problems and provide effective and optimal solutions.
- PEO 3: Professional Growth and Lifelong Learning: Graduates will demonstrate continuous professional development by seeking to keep pace with modern scientific advancements in civil engineering, either by obtaining advanced professional certifications, pursuing graduate studies, or taking on leadership roles. They will also be able to communicate clearly with various stakeholders, both technical and non-technical.
- PEO 4: Social and Ethical Responsibility: Graduates will practice the civil engineering profession in accordance with the highest ethical and professional standards, with a full awareness of the social and global impact of civil engineering on society. This will enable them to make informed decisions that consider professional values and social awareness and balance project requirements with social responsibility.
