Sana’a – The University of Science and Technology (UST) hosted a distinguished scientific event today through an introductory session on Doctor of Medicine (MD) programs, organized by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research in collaboration with the Deanship of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The session targeted medical interns and graduates of the Faculty of Medicine as part of the University’s efforts to promote advanced medical education pathways and encourage scientific research.
During the event, Prof. Ibrahim Al-Shaikh, Dean of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, and Prof. Waleed Ghailan, Coordinator of Graduate Programs at the Faculty of Medicine, presented a comprehensive overview of the MD programs, including admission requirements, study mechanisms, and the academic and research opportunities offered by these programs. They also highlighted the role of MD programs in preparing highly qualified medical professionals and researchers capable of contributing to the development of Yemen’s healthcare sector and advancing scientific research to address health-related challenges.
The speakers further discussed the differences between medical board certification programs and MD programs in medical specialties, while outlining the unique advantages of pursuing an MD degree at UST.
The event also featured an insightful address by Prof. Al-Qasim Mohammed Abbas, President of the University, who emphasized the importance of enrolling in MD programs as a transformative step in a physician’s professional development. He noted that specialization and scientific research have become essential pillars of excellence in modern medicine.
Prof. Al-Qasim Abbas explained that scientific research is not merely an academic requirement but a noble mission that serves society and humanity by developing evidence-based solutions to health and environmental challenges and by advancing diagnostic and treatment methods.
He also stressed the importance of publishing research in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, highlighting its role in documenting scholars’ achievements and establishing their presence within national, regional, and international academic communities. He emphasized that researchers who contribute to the advancement of human knowledge leave a lasting impact that transcends time and place.
The University President encouraged students and graduates to seize this opportunity by enrolling in MD programs and striving for academic excellence through dedication and perseverance. He affirmed that UST remains committed to supporting scientific ambition and providing an environment that fosters innovation, creativity, and research excellence.
The session also included valuable guidance from Prof. Ahmed Al-Mutreb, Professor of Cardiovascular Diseases, one of the leading founders of MD programs in Yemen, and recognized among the most productive cardiovascular research scholars in the Middle East. He shared practical advice for prospective applicants and highlighted the academic, professional, and future benefits of the MD program in advancing medical and research careers.
The event was attended by Prof. Abdullah Al-Makhlafi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; Dr. Mahdi Al-Qarawani, Vice Dean for Clinical Training and Hospitals Affairs; Dr. Fouad Hanash, Secretary-General of the University; Dr. Munther Ishaq, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Dr. Huda Al-Emad, Advisor to the University President; a number of faculty members; and a large gathering of medical interns and graduates from the Faculty of Medicine.
