Sana’a – The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Sana’a organized a scientific workshop on October 5, 2025, to review and approve the specification document for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program in several specialized medical tracks, including Oncologic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. The workshop brought together a distinguished group of academics and consultants from Yemeni universities and teaching hospitals, in addition to heads of academic departments and faculty members from the Faculty of Medicine.
The workshop was part of a series of academic initiatives aimed at strengthening postgraduate studies and expanding advanced medical specialties in accordance with academic accreditation requirements and internationally recognized standards in medical education.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Al-Qasim Mohammed Abbas, President of the University, emphasized the importance of the program as a strategic step toward advancing Yemen’s healthcare system and strengthening specialized scientific research in clinical and academic fields. He noted that the University is committed to launching advanced academic programs that address the needs of the healthcare sector in Yemen while aligning with international standards.
He further stressed the importance of establishing a clear academic pathway for students enrolled in the program, supported by defined timelines and commitments to avoid shortcomings experienced elsewhere.
For his part, Dr. Abdullah Al-Makhlafi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, commended the University President’s efforts in advancing the program and his close supervision to ensure its prompt implementation. He noted that the MD program combines both academic and clinical components and is widely recognized in many countries around the world.
Dr. Waleed Ghailan, Coordinator of Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, presented an overview of the program, highlighting its significance and the international and regional references used in developing the program specification document.
During the workshop, participants reviewed and discussed the program document and its four major tracks: Surgery, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. The document covered key elements including the program’s mission, objectives, learning outcomes, study plan, and graduate attributes. Participants contributed recommendations and developmental suggestions in preparation for the final approval of the program document.
The workshop was attended by Prof. Ibrahim Al-Shaikh, Dean of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research; Prof. Amin Al-Kastaban, Dean of Development and Quality Assurance; vice deans of the Faculty of Medicine; and heads of academic departments within the Faculty.
