Sana’a – The University of Science and Technology (UST) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting scientific research and strengthening partnerships with national sectors through its participation as the academic sponsor of the First National Scientific Conference on Yemeni Medicinal Honey, which commenced in the capital, Sana’a, under the slogan “From Natural Heritage to National Medicine.”
UST was represented at the conference by Prof. Abdullah Al-Jumaily, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, along with a number of faculty members and students from the college, and Mr. Abduljabbar Al-Muayyad, Deputy Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Their participation underscored the University’s role in contributing to scientific events that support health and economic development.
The three-day conference brings together representatives from government entities, the private sector, academic institutions, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Union, civil society organizations, as well as researchers and specialists. The event aims to harness scientific research and pharmaceutical innovation to develop therapeutic products based on honey and bee products, capitalizing on their biological properties to create high-value medical preparations. This initiative is expected to strengthen the national pharmaceutical industry and support the local economy.
During the opening session, Dr. Ali Shaiban, Minister of Health and Environment, highlighted the importance of the conference in showcasing the therapeutic and economic value of Yemeni honey. He noted that developing honey-based medicines, particularly for the treatment of burns, represents a significant step toward advancing local pharmaceutical manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
Meanwhile, Ammar Al-Karim, Acting Minister of Agriculture, emphasized that beekeeping and honey production constitute a promising economic sector that contributes to improving household incomes and strengthening food security. He called for greater efforts to protect and develop the sector in the face of various challenges.
For his part, Dr. Ghassan Al-Madani, Chairman of the Conference Preparatory Committee, outlined the conference program, which includes 28 developmental workshops, 24 scientific lectures, 22 research posters, and 12 scientific papers. The event also features the launch of a national campaign to promote Yemeni honey and the introduction of 30 pharmaceutical products based on honey and bee products.
The opening activities concluded with the inauguration of the accompanying exhibition, which showcased a wide range of Yemeni honey products, pharmaceutical factory outputs, and specialized association initiatives, reflecting the integration of scientific research with the productive and industrial sectors.
UST’s participation in this scientific event reflects its leading role in supporting national initiatives, promoting research and innovation, and linking higher education outcomes with sustainable development needs. Through such engagement, the University continues to contribute to the advancement of the healthcare sector, pharmaceutical industries, and community service.
