Excellence Program

To position the Internship Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Science and Technology (UST), as one of the leading programs in academic, training, and scientific research domains at the local and regional levels.
The Internship Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Science and Technology (UST), strives to be one of the university’s most distinguished programs by implementing a comprehensive scientific and clinical program that develops interns’ capabilities and skills in diagnosis and treatment planning. The program also aims to enhance scientific research skills and elevate professional ethics by providing an appropriate educational and training environment, conducting high-quality applied research, and delivering outstanding therapeutic services to the community. Furthermore, the program seeks to graduate distinguished dentists who are capable of efficiently applying the skills they have learned and the experience they have acquired with a high level of competence.
  1. Provide dental interns with theoretical and practical skills related to the clinical aspects of dentistry, aligned with the knowledge acquired during the bachelor’s degree, under the supervision of faculty members at the College.
  2. Build interns’ self-confidence and enhance their ability to make sound decisions, take appropriate actions, and assume full responsibility toward nursing staff and patients.
  3. Improve interns’ competencies in preparing and delivering research projects and seminars, as well as identifying and supporting their areas of interest within the field of dentistry.
  4. Elevate the professional ethical standards of dental interns and strengthen their communication skills with patients.
  5. Equip dental interns with the skills required to apply the highest standards of infection control.
  6. Provide dental interns with the essential skills needed to meet labor market demands and requirements.
  1. The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry and have completed all graduation requirements.
  2. No more than three years must have elapsed since graduation. If this period is exceeded, the applicant shall be required to sit for an examination determined by the College.
  3. The applicant must pay the fees prescribed for the Internship Program.
  4. Full commitment to attendance in the scientific, training, and practical components of the program is required.
  5. Full commitment to fulfilling all theoretical and clinical requirements of the program is required.
Requirements for Graduates of Other Universities:
  1. Fulfillment of all the requirements applicable to graduates of the University of Science and Technology.
  2. The Bachelor’s degree certificate must be duly accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The original certificate shall be reviewed, and a certified copy shall be retained in the student’s file.
  3. Successful completion of the selection and admission procedures determined by the College.

The scientific program is organized as follows:

  1. The internship period extends over one full academic year.
  2. One month at the beginning of the program is allocated for lectures delivered by faculty members on diagnosis and treatment planning, in accordance with a proposed plan prepared by the Program Coordinator and approved by the Dean.
  3. An orientation meeting is held to familiarize interns with all program requirements, including implementation of requirements, seminars, and schedules.
  4. Scientific seminars and discussions are conducted. The dental intern selects seminar topics based on the intended area of specialization, at a rate of three seminars during the program. This is carried out in coordination with the academic departments of the College and their faculty members.
  5. Case presentation: the intern is required to present a comprehensive case that includes a full presentation of all treatments performed by the intern. The case must include no fewer than three different treatments across dental specialties, starting from diagnosis and treatment planning through to final treatment. The case must be fully documented with photographs and medical procedures.

 

Practical Program
The practical program is organized as follows:
  1. Attendance during the morning session in the clinics for diagnosis and emergency treatment, according to a schedule agreed upon with the supervisors of the morning clinics at both the male and female branches.
  2. Attendance during the evening session on a daily basis for a period of three working hours in the clinics, during which clinical requirements are completed across all departments. This is carried out according to a schedule specifically designed for the Internship Program and a requirements list covering all dental specialties.
  3. The clinical requirements are determined and approved by the academic departments of the College.
  4. The intern must complete all requirements of the Internship Program, with a minimum achievement of no less than 80% of the requirements in each specialty individually.



Training Program

The training program is organized as follows:
  1. The training program includes specialized courses (optional) offered for specific fees. Upon completion, the dental intern is awarded a certificate for each course. These courses are coordinated with the relevant departments of the College and the University’s training centers and include the following:
  • Dental photography course
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) writing course
  • Job interview skills course
  • Antibiotic use course
  1. A Scientific Day is designated during which the best seminars are presented, as selected by the Internship Program Committee according to a pre-arranged schedule. This Scientific Day is organized in coordination with the College Scientific Committee and the College Deanship.

Each dental intern shall be provided with the materials listed in the table attached in Appendix (1) of the Internship Program PSD, in accordance with an approved mechanism adopted by the College that ensures proper use and prevents wastage. The student shall bear full responsibility for any errors resulting from misuse of these materials.

The absenteeism rate must not exceed 25% of the program. If this limit is exceeded, the student shall be considered deprived and shall not be awarded the Internship Certificate.
Students from outside the University may be admitted to the program provided that the admission requirements are met, on the condition that their number does not exceed 20% of the total number of students permitted to enroll in the program. The student shall be granted an Internship Training Certificate indicating the university from which the Bachelor’s degree was obtained and the year of graduation.
Students are admitted to the program in two cohorts:
  • The first cohort in the first semester of the academic year, in accordance with the University academic calendar.
  • The second cohort in the second semester of the same academic year.
Internship certificates shall be issued in two phases, in accordance with the admission phase, after successful completion of the program for one full academic year.
