Sana’a – The University of Science and Technology today hosted a distinguished academic event featuring an introductory meeting on Doctor of Medicine (MD) programs. The event was organized by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research in cooperation with the Deanship of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The meeting targeted internship students and graduates of the College of Medicine, as part of the University’s efforts to enhance pathways for advanced medical education and to promote scientific research.
During the meeting, Prof. Ibrahim Al‑Sheikh, Dean of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, and Prof. Walid Ghaylan, Head of Graduate Programs at the College of Medicine, presented an overview of the MD programs, including admission requirements, study mechanisms, and the academic and research advantages offered by these programs. They also highlighted the role of MD programs in preparing scientifically and research-qualified medical professionals capable of contributing to the development of Yemen’s healthcare sector and strengthening the role of scientific research in addressing health challenges.
Prof. Al‑Sheikh and Prof. Ghaylan also addressed the differences between medical board programs and doctoral (MD) programs in medical specialties, in addition to the advantages of enrolling in the MD program at the University of Science and Technology (UST).
The meeting also included an awareness and guidance speech delivered by Prof. Al‑Qasim Mohammed Abbas, President of UST, in which he emphasized the importance of enrolling in doctoral programs as a qualitative shift in a physician’s professional career path. He noted that deep specialization and scientific research have become fundamental pillars of excellence in the medical field.
The University President explained that scientific research is not merely an academic requirement, but rather a noble mission that serves society and humanity by providing scientific solutions to health and environmental problems and by advancing diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
He further stressed the importance of publishing in internationally refereed scientific journals, given their significant role in documenting researchers’ achievements and preserving their names within scientific communities at the national, regional, and international levels. He affirmed that researchers who enrich human knowledge leave a lasting impact that transcends time and place.
Prof. Al‑Qasim Abbas called on students and graduates to seize this opportunity by enrolling in MD programs and working diligently and sincerely to achieve academic excellence, reaffirming that the University will continue to support scientific and research ambitions and provide an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.
For his part, Prof. Ahmed Al‑Mitrab, Professor of Cardiovascular Diseases, one of the leading founders of MD programs in the Republic of Yemen, and ranked among the top ten researchers in the Middle East and the most productive in cardiovascular research, offered a set of valuable advice to students intending to enroll in these programs. He reviewed the advantages of the MD program, its academic and professional objectives, and its future prospects in advancing students’ medical and research careers.
The meeting was attended by Prof. Abdullah Al‑Mikhlafi, Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences; Dr. Mahdi Al‑Qarwani, Vice Dean for Clinical Training and Hospitals; Dr. Fouad Hanash, Secretary General of the University; Prof. Munther Ishaq, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; Dr. Huda Al‑Emad, Advisor to the University President; a number of faculty members from the College of Medicine; and a large gathering of internship students and graduates of the College of Medicine at UST.
